@EN To investigate the clinical characteristics of the diabetic patients under the age of 35 years in Korea.
@ES Methods :
@EN The study group consisted of 235 diabetic patients under the age of 35 years, who were seen in diabetic clinic of Seoul Eulji General Hospital from October, 1993 to March, 1994.
Variables included in the analysis were age, sex, family history of diabetes, treatment modality, fasting and postprandial C-peptide, duration of disease, and diabetic complication.
@ES Results :
@EN 1) The mean duration of diabetes was 5.4 years.
The most patient(52.3%) were in 4th decade.
The prevalence of complications increased with larger duration of diabetes mellitus.
2) We could classified 21 patients(13.8%) as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus(IDDM) according to the level of C-peptide. (fasting C-peptide<0.5ng/ml, and postprandial 2 hour C-peptide level<1.0ng/ml)
The 19 patients were typical IDDM and two patients were slowly progressive IDDM.
The 122 patients(80.3%) were thought be non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, and 11 patients (7.2%) would not be classified.
3) The patient shad less familial history of diabetes mellitus with the age and overall rate of positive family history was 48.5%.
@ES Conclusion :
@EN Among 235 Korean diabetes under the age of 35 years, 20% were obese, 12.5% were typical IDDM, 49.5% had family history.
